underground labyrinth hand-built by Sicilian immigrant Baldassare
Forestiere from 1906 to 1946. Located in the hot central valley of
California, in the city of Fresno, Forestiere Underground Gardens are now
100 years-old, and were designated a state landmark in1979. This
pictorial journey will show you why this historic site has been sought out
by generations of curiosity seekers, architects and engineers, artists,
scholars, and travelers from around the world.
Over 150 spectacular photos are accompanied by a passionate
narrative written by the author, Silvio Manno, a fellow Italian immigant who
admits that he fell in love with the Gardens when he first saw them in
1976. Here Manno painstakingly recounts each nook and cranny that
originated in the mind of the visionary Forestiere as he worked with the
simple tools of a farmer--picks, shovels, and wheelbarrows to build his
version of the American dream.
